Since 2004, drawing and painting have been Kate Matthiesen’s driving passion. Her exhibition history began when her work was juried into the Greater Houston Fall Open Show through the Houston Civic Art Association (Bellaire, TX) in 2006. Also that year, her one-person exhibition, Fresh Air, was on view at The Jung Center of Houston’s main gallery, setting an opening reception attendance record. Matthiesen has continued to exhibit annually through such venues as the Lovett Inn Gallery, The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (Nassau Bay, TX), Houston Community College.Central Art Gallery, the Museum of Printing History and with the Bayou City Arts Festival. She regularly receives awards and honorable mentions for her work, and it is in numerous private and corporate collections. The artist uses acrylics and pastels on multiple surfaces, including canvas, paper, board and velvet.  She works in an expressive, painterly way and incorporates many creative techniques to complete a piece. On seeing the work of Cy Twombly, Kate remarked, “He talks just like I do.” She was born with a profound language-based learning disability and speaks and writes with difficulty. Matthiesen lives and works in Houston.
