Kathryn Klauber’s Demonstration and Talk on Counterproof

January, 2012

Kathryn Klauber presents the Saturday, January 14 program with a counterproof demonstration and talk. Counterproof is a technique that produces the finest quality copperplate printing.

Art historian, presenter and studio artist,  Kathryn combines a global knowledge of art history with the eye of an artist. She is an instructor of art and teaches art history at the Rice Glasscock School.

Kathryn holds a MEd in Art Education with a specialization in Art Museum Studies from the University of Houston and a BFA in Art Education at the University of Texas, Austin.

Historically, counterproof was reserved for an artist’s wealthiest or most influential patrons. After the fresh print is pulled, another piece of paper is immediately placed across its surface. This results in a print with delicate lines, oriented to the same direction as the original drawing or watercolor and with the final image lacking the beveled impression left by a plate edge.

Program Venue: Art Supply on Main, 2711 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002

Burton, Judi

I recently rejoined VAA September 2011, after attending the September Program – Behind the Scenes Tour with Del Zogg, the Director of works on paper, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This program was so fascinating, and such a wonderful opportunity to be able to view this area of the museum.

As a guest of Member John Painter, I met so many wonderful VAA members who shared their enthusiasm about the VAA membership, upcoming programs, shows, their new logo, and website.

Tencer, Dune

As a member of VAA Houston I have the opportunity to interact professionally with Houston’s multi faceted art community. Art can often be a lonely profession and an organization like VAA has provided me an opportunity to get to know artist not only in my chosen media but to learn, visit and get to know artist in a variety of media endeavors.

At the age of ten, unable to participate in athletics or ballet I was given art lessons. Shortly thereafter I was accepted to study oil painting under Paul Chidlaw in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have been painting ever since. I hold a BFA from Stephens College in Art History and Interior Design with a minor in painting, a Masters in Education with a specialty in Art Therapy.  I have had the honor of studying Italian Renaissance Art and painting in Perugia, Italy and attended the University of Copenhagen, Denmark for a semester to study design.

After college like so many artists my art was put aside to be a housewife, mother, teacher etc. When I began painting again I chose watercolor.   During the summer of 2009 my creativity took another turn.  I attended the Hudson River Valley Artist Workshops in Greenville, New York.

In my new pieces I have been concentrating on composition, texture, movement and above all the use of color in all its boldness, subtlety and vibrancy. I love color, to me color is exhilarating.
